Annual Meetings
Each year, the ELC sponsors a two-day annual meeting for its members to discuss key leadership topics and trends, build relationships across organizations, and determine priorities for the work and process of the Collaborative. The first annual meeting was convened in June 2001 in Boston, MA, at the New England Aquarium with participation from thirteen leadership training and development organizations. Participants discussed the broad range of leadership-building initiatives underway in the environmental movement and identified areas for specific collaboration. Since then, meetings have been held in 2002, 2003, and 2004, each with a different focus for discussion and information-sharing, including discussing trends in the environmental field, diversity, and funding for leadership development; exchanging training tools and materials; and exploring collaborations. All ELC members are encouraged to attend annual meetings to build relationships with colleagues in the leadership development field and to gain resources and ideas for their work.

Conference Calls
ELC members regularly convene via conference calls to discuss specific topics in the environmental leadership arena. The calls are an opportunity to share lessons learned with one another, hear from experts in the field, and gain advice on program development. Call topics have included: alumni networks, diversity, international programming, evaluation, leadership models, mentoring, and training. ELC members often lead the calls or invite guest speakers from their networks to talk on a specific topic of interest.

The State of Environmental Leadership Development Report
During the course of its work, the ELC has collected information on environmental leadership programs that are participating ELC members, discussed the need for additional investment in leadership development in the environmental field, and assessed strategies being used to promote environmental leadership. In 2003, the ELC worked to compile information about the collective lessons learned and strategies used by organizations that are members in the ELC. The ELC plans to publish this information in 2004 to raise visibility for leadership development issues in the environmental field.

Outreach and Recruitment
The ELC conducts outreach to and seeks to connect with environmental leadership development organizations that are interested in becoming ELC members. ELC member organizations vary in the constituencies they serve, focus of their programs, and details of training and support services. To become an ELC member, an organization or program should be:

  • Working on ENVIRONMENTAL issues, broadly defined;
  • Focused on LEADERSHIP within the environmental field;
  • Interested in COLLABORATIVE learning and sharing with other ELC members.
